“Sui Generis” which is Latin for “Unique”, is one word that can describe the experience in which we intend on providing for any individual that meets our music family. Unique experiences at a unique space where all individuals are welcomed to uniquely thrive, becoming the best possible version of their unique self. Sui Generis started off in 2016 as a means of aiding some young individuals who were interested in learning to play the drum set and then it blossomed into a movement, a family where any individual, it does not matter the age, race, size, skill level can come and flourish freely, becoming the BEST, most PRESENT and AWARE version of themself. Using their God give talent to strengthen and heal them first, and by extension the world, re-presenting the higher power, that God power, that will live on in ALL of us, through their music, FOREVER.
Sui Generis, helping you Fuel your God give Talent.” A slogan we have used to sum up what we would like part of our purpose to be on this earth.
“Music takes me to another world, medicine to my soul, steroids that strengthens my heart, from this I’ll NEVER Depart,”- Quianna Mahabir
Adaptable, dynamic, versatile drummer and percussionist, who is always up to the task. Quianna Mahabir has 8 years’ experience as a drummer, 5 years as an educator and 4 years as a percussionist. Quianna holds a BA in Musical Arts (Special), Upper Second-Class Honours from the University of the West Indies St. Augustine Campus.
Growing up observing her father play drums in church, she began to fall deeply in love with the instrument and was then put to the test one Sunday when the drummer was unable to make it. At the tender age of 9 years old, little Quianna was playing for her worship team in church without any formal training. In 2012, she was called to audition for Nehilet Blackman and the All-Girls Band. Krystle Bascombe, one of her major inspirations as well as the first and only other female musician she knew at the time, made the connection, giving her the opportunity to audition for the band, in which she was successful. This was the catalyst for her pursuit of a career in music and adding her name to the few female drummers and percussionists in Trinidad and Tobago.
In 2015 she began her Certificate in Musical Arts followed by Bachelor of Arts Music Special with the University of the West Indies. That same year, she entered an international all female drumming competition, “Hit Like A Girl,” being the only participant from Trinidad and Tobago as well as the Caribbean. Though she only made it to the semi-finals, this experience motivated her to continue her journey.
